Armed forces day

28th June 2018

By Combat Stress

Armed Forces Day on 30 June is an opportunity for the nation to show its support for the men and women who make up the military community – service personnel, veterans, military families and cadets. They all play an important role.

At Combat Stress, the veterans’ mental health charity, we’re immensely proud of all that the Armed Forces community has done and continues to do for this country. While many people will be celebrating on Saturday, we know there’ll be others reflecting on the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces community, and those who bear the physical or psychological scars.

Combat Stress is dedicated to helping former servicemen and women overcome mental health problems.

On average, they wait more than a decade before seeking help, unsure of the fact they’ve got a mental health condition because they don’t recognise the signs and symptoms.

The sooner veterans come forward for help, the sooner we can help them overcome their trauma. Isolation, anger and aggressive behaviour, sleeplessness, feeling irritable, nightmares, flashbacks, feeling alert for danger, and panic attacks are all symptoms that can be displayed by someone with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Our 24-hour helpline, provided by Connect Assist, is available to veterans and their families on 0800 138 1619. Serving personnel can call our helpline on 0800 323 4444. We’re here to support you.
